The show is part of the V&A’s Conscious Style day, an event to explore the growing popularity of ethical fashion, with swishing, styling workshops, talks and the fashion show, all taking place in the V&A’s new Sackler Centre for education.

The fashion show will feature high street and one-off pieces by labels such as Noir, Del Forte, People Tree, Stuart & Brown, Amana and Wildlifeworks.

New Entrepreneurs

New Entrepreneurs aims to help all budding fashion entrepreneurs learn about sustainable business practices. A series of two-hour fashion specific workshops will offer you the opportunity to learn from pioneers in the ethical fashion industry. The New Entrepreneurs website will feature downloadable resources to guide you through core elements of the business planning process and inspiring case studies of successful ethical brands.

Workshops

The New Entrepreneurs will explore sustainable practices ranging from eco design to ethical marketing. The programme will introduce you to the ways in which businesses can support and benefit the people behind their products; reduce their impact on the environment through sustainable manufacturing processes and develop effective marketing tools to communicate sustainability to consumers.

The workshops will focus on four key areas and will be held at The Fashion & Textiles Museum in November 2008 and again in January 2009; each workshop will be facilitated by two fashion industry leaders, who have particular expertise in the specific area of business planning.

This is just a quick reminder to let you know that applications for the British Council’s award to find the UK’s Young Fashion Entrepreneur 2009 are open and they close on 17th October 2008. They are looking for young, talented entrepreneurs within the fashion sector with the emphasis on entrepreneurial, not creative ability and applicants needn’t be self employed. We are looking for dynamic individuals with at least three years experience in the industry aged 25-35. Six successful finalists will be taken on a tour of the fashion industry in India, meeting industry leaders so that they can see for themselves how business is done there.

Rags2Riches: Creating Social Statements in Style

Rags2Riches is a social business enterprise in the Philippines that is creating waves of social statements in style.

About a year ago, a group of young professionals visited one of the country's largest dumpsites, Payatas. They found out that the women community of Payatas were rug-weavers who were getting less than .03cents (USD) per rug that they toil over for days. These women create these rugs out of scrap cloth that could be seen in the dumpsite. Indeed, hundreds of tons of recyclable waste are being dumped on Payatas on a daily basis. Rags2Riches was born out of these social problems.

Supported by one of Asia's top fashion designers, Mr. Rajo Laurel (http://www.houseoflaurel.com/), Rags2Riches and the empowered women of Payatas were able to create beautiful fashion pieces made of recycled scraps salvaged directly from garments factories. As testimony to its success and relevance, Rags2Riches recently bagged the University of San Francisco's Social Enterprise Award. The emerging social enterprise is also currently exploring export possibilities with the intention of engaging the world in creative recycling and fair trade. Launch of a new Eco-Fashion label - Freed Fashion

Freed Fashion Ltd is an ethical sportswear company focused on changing and challenging the fashion industry by being an example. We will begin by selling a simple T Shirt. By purchasing a T Shirt you will be directly investing in the lives of the disadvantaged people who produce them.
To begin with, manufacturing will take place in Cambodia alongside an NGO called Daughters based in Phnom Penh who develop skills in the lives of young people who have been involved in human trafficking. Daughters’ aim is to help restore dignity and self-worth, and to help girls find viable alternatives for their lives. Daughters have allowed us to use part of their premises and we will also be employing two young women who attend Daughters classes where they are supported in their efforts to leave the sex industry.

Our manufacturing will take place in disadvantaged areas throughout the globe, our first being in Phnom Penh in Cambodia starting summer 2008. We also have a vision to start projects in other Asian countries such as Tibet, India and China to name a few. We will start each project with a training program that will cover all areas of the production process of our garments.
We want to raise awareness of human trafficking through fashion. This will be implemented by providing information to all of you via our website and by handing out fliers detailing the situation. At our stalls we will also provide face-to-face contact to browsers and customers alike.

I thought would be first one to review the night which was great fun for all, the pictures kindly donated by Nico at Picnix.co.uk. First one up is the DEVIDOLL stall which had the fabulous Aoki jeans which were tried by a crowd very bum friendly. She also had the Mociun hemp and tencel dress which also got terribly worn and coveted. The picture was taken just before the crowds came so the girls are having a relaxing breather. Sindhu the owner also got all us stylists to do a little video interview for her site luckily I haven't seen it anywhere yet, which is great cause I didn't get to impart my fab knowledge of the UKs landfill situation. But horror of horrors the girls at AMO OSI informed me on the night that they would not be redoing their fab jacket for the next season( already got two so this is serious) they brought a lovely selection of three or four divine ones and at a reduced price so there were a couple of savvy fashionistas that clicked and thought and bought. Oh fudge I am going to have to really try and earn some more money too and get one more if its not too late. They are just so0000 Classic. Nina and Jess were terribly sweet all evening they changed from one piece to another so we all got a chance to see their new pieces on!!!
